Considering Pet Therapy Work?

Do you have a friendly dog who truly enjoys meeting and visiting with new people?  If so, therapy work may a perfect choice for you and your dog.  This is a great way to give back to the community and can be tremendously rewarding.  Most begin with Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA), where you and your dog, either individually or as a group, visit people in varying facilities such as a nursing home, hospital or school.  You may also decide to participate in the  Reading Education and Assistance with Dogs (READ) program where you visit a school or library for children to be able to read to your dog to improve literacy skills.  Both of these programs have shown tremendous success over the years! Stroking a pet has proven to be very relaxing and therapeutic to someone who has been wounded, is stressed, depressed or simply misses having their own pets and are unable to see them due to the care or treatment they may require.  These simple gestures make such a difference, bringing happiness, relaxation, joy and often the most important, a few minutes away from their problems.

As long as your dog has the desire to interact with a variety of people and enjoys being petted & hugged, through training, we can teach them self control and build the reliability with their commands that they’ll need to be successful.  The more you’re able to then utilize those commands in a wide variety of settings to help your dog with generalization, you and your dog can become a successful Pet Therapy Team!

If this may be something you’d like to pursue, let us know, we’re happy to discuss your goals and a path that will lead you to them.
